Mountain Chicken Exhibition Officially Opens-
It was a hectic Friday afternoon last week when the Department of Environment in partnership with the Montserrat National Trust opened doors to the public for the Mountain Chicken Exhibition.
Honorable Minister of Agriculture,Land, Housing and Environment was the Guest Speaker, this was also the official send-off of the frogs into the wild. The mountain chicken is a unique type of frog found on Montserrat and the Dominica. During the volcanic crisis of 1997, the frogs had to be captured to safety as during that time many of them died affecting their numbers that had already gone down. The chytrid fungus at a later stage, also contributed to the decrease in the number of species on the island.
The Department of Environment and their partners from two United Kingdom Zoos have put surmountable work to ascertain that the frogs do not eventually become extinct. The release of the mountain chickens on Friday evening, local time, was the fourth time such a project happened on Montserrat.
