Visiting the Botanical Gardens

The Montserrat National Trust Botanical Gardens and the Oriole Gift Shop are located on Main Road in Olveston—behind the green wall, across from the Montserrat Secondary School.

The Botanical Gardens feature species endemic to Montserrat and the wider Caribbean region. Highlights include the orchid house, medicinal garden, cacti and succulent garden, and a palm promenade.

Orchid House

Wide shot of a sign reading "orchid house" with an open red gate leading into a protected garden.

Our serene Orchid House is one of the few places to see the endemic and critically endangered “Montserrat Orchid” (Epidendrum montserratense). It also hosts a variety of regional orchid species and a growing hybrid collection.

Medicinal Garden

Our Medicinal Garden celebrates the plants we use in traditional homoeopathic recipes, from bush teas to salves. Discover the fountain of youth (or at least a new headache cure) in our extensive medicinal plant collection. Don’t forget to stop by the Oriole Gift Shop to take home a copy of our popular “Medicinal Plants on Montserrat” booklet.

Palm Promenade

Palm Promenade

The Palm Promenade is a stunning garden centrepiece showcasing the Caribbean islands’ wide range of palm species. Pose with a Royal (Roystonea regia), take a selfie with a Fishtail (Caryota), and meet a fellow Traveller (Ravenala madagascariensis)…but in another section, because it’s not a real palm!

Pribby Hedge

“Pribby” (Rondeletia buxifolia) is an endemic flowering shrub once considered extinct. Royal Botanical Gardens Kew and Montserrat forestry researchers rediscovered Pribby in 2006. Montserrat National Trust Botanical Gardens staff successfully propagated Pribby in our Nursery. Our transplants now form a flourishing hedge.

Endemic Plant Propagation

We propagate numerous endemic species and document their success in the offices.

The Cacti and succulent garden features several tropical species. Winter visitors: don’t miss our brilliantly flowering Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera).
